Jonathan Powell played a crucial role in the most recent peace process in Mozambique, as a close advisor to President Nyusi and an official mediator in the peace talks. As well as providing support to Nyusi on process and strategy, Jonathan also accompanied President Nyusi to Gorongosa to meet with the leader of the armed opposition group, Renamo, to establish a backchannel that was paramount to reaching the peace agreement. He received a special and personal thanks from President Nyusi in his speech at the official signing ceremony for the peace agreement in the capital Maputo, on August 6th 2019.
